I can’t see the forest, the trees are in the way.
December 25th, 2007
It has been pointed out that I surround myself with trees. My furniture is wood, my favorite plants are trees, I love forests, my personal logos are all drawn from Aesculus Hippocastanum, and now I’m growing my own mini forest.
With some help from Alyssa, my Bonsai forest now has two younguns that’ll hopefully be contributing to the foliage. After a random comment during a phone conversation a few months ago, she took some rosemary cuttings and recently overnighted me two of the now well-rooted sprigs. Yes, rosemary, as in the herb, so it won’t be a true bonsai… but I figured for my first time trying to raise and sculpt my own tree I’d go with something that’s used to being small.
The next attempt will probably be a japanese red maple, which I will probably raise to be fairly large and will try to get it to grow from the seed (which means starting in the fall, and varying color rather than a contiguous red through the seasons). I’ll couple that with a few junipers and/or a spruces of some kind, just in case some of them don’t make it. By that time I’m going to need a committed space that gets a respectable amount of sunlight, which my current apartment doesn’t. I do have a three season room which gets indirect light in the afternoons which is perfect for young plants, but I can’t use that in the wintertime.
I just hope that I don’t end up with a rainforest :).
