To paraphrase one of my favorite quotes on the subject, "A leader without followers is just out for a walk." Yes, leaders need to come up with ideas and make sure they get implemented. However, leaders also inspire others to follow them -- people to "arrange facilities and resources and all that other crap," and people do the actual work of fixing the problem or making an idea a reality. The people who follow leaders do so because they are <i>inspired<i> to do so, and those people take all shapes: planners, managers, administrators and worker bees.

I am a manager. I ask the tough questions, enable people to succeed, stay on top of things, remain accountable, demand accountability, stay up late thinking through the details, and plan everything. I am to blame when something fails. If all this world had were leaders, we would never get anywhere. You love your leaders, you need your managers.

a leader needs a team
if there is no team there is no leader,
meaning: it is the team that makes the leader
unfortunately this basic wisdom seems to get lost on the way up to the CEO

>Also, I end up taking all the blame if something fails. And I hate being seen as a failure.

this is the reason why I shy away from management.. whereas I see leadership not as being so goal-oriented. For me, a leader is one who 'rallies the troops' or is an advocate or evangelist. If you get but one person excited about your topic, you've been successful.
