Morning Constitutional

More blog neglect, but this time I actually have some interesting things to report.

First of all, in an effort to deal with blog neglect I’ve shifted my usual authoring time to before work rather than after. Afterwards there are simply too many distractions- mental, physical and… ahem… social for me to really get focused on my thoughts and get them down. Whether I can keep it up is anyone’s guess, but for now I’ve got a nice cool morning, a full battery and a patch of sunshine to write in. What else could you want?

Miscellanea

Fall San Francisco trip is starting to take shape. Looks like it’s cheaper to fly into SF rather than Reno, and go hit the JMT from there. I won’t really have any time to visit people, as I’ll rapidly disappear into uncharted (sortof) wilderness. And when I come back I’ll be more interested in soaking up hot springs than driving back to SF to meet peeps.

This Extrovert Thing is Paying off…

So last night I managed to get enough coworkers together to overcome my personal resistance to blind-attending Juice, a social networking event at the Firehouse Lounge for Creatives in the Marketing/Advertising community in Pittsburgh. Yes, that’s a mouthful. Nevertheless, it was a good experience. Apparently, one beer is enough to make me approachable, while two is enough to make me approach people, and as a result I turned into the point-man for our gaggle of kickass creatives who had suddenly morphed into a lean, green, lead generation machine.

Random Quotes

Fun Quotes overheard from work:

“So, we’ve been here a week, the internet’s down, the power’s gone out, this is definitely a sign of good things to come…”

“You should have been here last night- about 6, the heat came on, and it was blasting, and then a bunch of chinese immigrants came in and started making shoes…”

I love our developers. They fill the office with mirth :)

Shit

The interview today… interesting. I dunno how I feel about the sincerity of the CEO, but then I have a tendency to secondguess intent. The place in question is called elliance. The standing offer I have from them right now is an 8 week project in two segments, an understood part time freelance. The first is content, layout, and interactivity, the second is transitions and experience. Paid by the hour, freelance, with the potential of a fulltime job offer in the interim. The reason he gave me for not putting in an offer right away is that he promised two more people interviews on friday and monday.

What, again?

Third late night at work. I might get some sleep, we’ll see. But for some reason, this one feels different. It’s a different project, a different problem, a different language, a little less stupid, and a few positive things have come through my life recently that have really pulled up my spirits.

New Job: Week 1, Recap

The culture shock was the hardest to take, and that wasn’t too difficult. You come in, you’re expected to know what to do, when it’s due, and who you need to talk to. What you don’t have to do is get signoff. There’s no accountability other than yourself here. Back at NDC, it was true design by committee. Everyone had to get their word in, everyone had to get involved, and you were accountable for everything.

Life, or something like it…

Life, or something like it. Well, to be honest I’ve been spinning in 12 different directions up until recently, and I’ve been filling this space with trite commentary, memes, and emotional broadcasts that really don’t provide me with any kind of in memoriam of my life.

No time….

The complete lack of free time is getting to me, and it’s not letting up. In two weeks I have deliverables- one take home midterm, one exam, one paper rough draft, one freelance project, all due the same weekend. I have friends coming through next weekend to crash, and I promised them Adventures in Cooking. Work’s big deadline tomorrow had me at work all day today (going home now). Somewhere I have to do laundry, read 5 chapters of Human Resources (I think I’ve discovered an aspect of business that I have to force myself to care about), and find 40 hours of freelancing time.

AIM and productivity

The first should be obvious, because of the distraction. The latter is a bit more convoluted. If you’re constantly Emailing, Chatting, or communicating with your friends, you feel like they have a ‘virtual presence’ in your life, and face-to-face interaction isn’t as valuable or necessary. And yet you can ask anyone and they will tell you that face-to-face is far more valuable and entertaining than a little AIM window. So why is there this dichotomy between the Chat Culture and what people acknowledge as true? Consider the economics: Hanging out with Friends has value. AIM, MSN, and other things are classic examples of disruptive technologies to that, they’re less functional (no actual face to face), cheaper (transaction cost is significantly reduced), start downmarket (back when IRC was a cult thing), and grows rapidly (who doesn’t have IM?).
